DESTIN, Fla. (AP) — Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is apologizing for what he calls an attempt at humor saying he considers the looks of an assistant coach’s wife before deciding whether to hire.

The coach apologized in a string of comments on Twitter on Thursday, saying he regrets how he conveyed his message and that his foot doesn’t taste too good.

Franklin told a Nashville radio station beachside in Destin he will not hire someone until seeing the man’s wife first to see if she looks like a “D1 recruit.” His comments during the Southeastern Conference annual meetings also landed him a talk with his boss.

Vanderbilt vice chancellor David Williams said in a statement they discussed “how inappropriate and offensive” Franklin’s comments were “no matter his state of mind or intent.”
