Veterans, employers connect at event

Vancouver — More than 100 veterans attended Thursday’s Jobs for Veterans hiring event hosted by WorkSource at the Armed Forces Reserve Center. The participation of more than 50 employers, 12 service providers and eight schools attracted job-seeking veterans from around the Pacific Northwest to the semi-annual event.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 48,000 veterans lived in southwest Washington in 2010 and 4,200 of them reported they were unemployed.

“Our veterans’ staff worked closely with 925 of these men and women last year and over 61 percent were employed after receiving specialized job search assistance,” said Michael Benko, WorkSource Vancouver’s local veterans employment representative.

Employers or veterans interested in participating in the next Jobs for Veterans event in 2013 should contact Benko at 360-735-4981 or MBenko@esd.wa.gov.
