BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Frank Shorter recently returned to the twisting and narrow streets of Munich to retrace his historic marathon win.
Not on foot this time — there was simply too much traffic — but as a passenger in a car as he filmed a segment for a documentary on the ’72 Summer Games.
Forty years ago Monday, Shorter pulled away from the pack at the nine-mile mark of the race — a gutsy move so early — to become the first American man to capture the Olympic marathon title in 64 years.
His return to Munich two months ago brought back powerful memories: Like the murder of 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team and hearing boos as he neared the finish when an impostor ran onto the track.
