LONGVIEW — The Corps of Engineers is taking the first steps in a $257 million project that begins this summer to stabilize jetties at the mouth of the Columbia River.
The corps is taking public comment on its plan to stabilize eroding dunes at Clatsop Spit, near Fort Stevens State Park west of Astoria, Ore.
Spokeswoman Michelle Helms told The Daily News the corps will work with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to limit the impact of the work at Fort Stevens.
The overall project to restore three jetties at the mouth of the river will take seven years. The jetties funnel silt into the ocean and help maintain a channel for ocean ships to reach ports on the Columbia River.
