CHELATCHIE PRAIRIE — Sunset Falls campground in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest will open in mid-May and be on the federal reservation system this season.
The 18-site campground is along the East Fork of the Lewis River just inside the forest’s western boundary. Sixteen of the sites will on the reservation system. Two sites — Nos. 17 and 18 — will be available on a first-come basis.
Reservations may be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at http://www.recreation.gov.
Sites at Sunset Falls will cost $12 per night. All sites are available when not reserved. Reservation status will be posted at each site.
Canyon Creek campground, open now, has nine sites on a first-come basis. The cost at Canyon Creek is $5 per night.
Lower Falls campground will open as soon as hazard trees are removed and water tests completed. The campground, along road No. 90 on the upper North Fork of the Lewis River, offers 42 sites on a first-come basis. The cost is $15 for a family site, $30 for a double site and $35 for a group site.
Lewis River Horse Camp is open on a first-come basis. The vandalized fee tube will be replaced and it will cost $5 per night to camp.
Michael Downs, a Gifford Pinchot National Forest recreation planner, said collecting fees at Lewis River Horse Camp will allow the Forest Service to maintain better and improve the campground.
