CANYON CITY, Ore. —
Protesters say 16 people were arrested in Eastern Oregon in another attempt to block a megaload of oil refinery equipment headed for western Canada.
A spokeswoman for the moving company, Holly Zander, says the 450-ton load got underway after the demonstration Monday near John Day, and it made 30 miles toward the Idaho border.
Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer says protesters were jailed on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing a public highway. A 16-year-old girl was released.
The Rising Tide environmental group says extracting tar sands oil in Canada will aggravate climate change. They and Umatilla tribal members tried to block the load at the Port of Umatilla, and three people were arrested.
The load does 35 mph but must pull over often to let traffic by.
