Victoire declared handicap winner of Sydney-Hobart

HOBART, Australia (AP) — Victoire is declared the handicap winner of the Sydney to Hobart race Monday, 1 12 days after Wild Oats XI took line honors in the annual yachting classic.

Victoire is a Cookson 50 owned by Sydney plastic surgeon Darryl Hokdgkinson and formerly known as Jazz. It was ninth across the line Sunday morning. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia declared it the handicap winner when main challenger, Wild Rose, ran out of time at 7 a.m. Monday.

When the handicap winner was announced Monday, 38 boats had finished, 46 were still racing and 10 had retired.

Wild Oats is owned by billionaire mogul Bob Oatley, who is head of the Australian syndicate challenging for the next America’s Cup. It won for the seventh time when it finished the 628-nautical-mile race in 2 days, 6 hours, 7 minutes.
