Oregon State Police say divers have recovered a boy’s body from a pickup that slid on icy Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge, crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the Columbia River.

Lt. Gregg Hastings says the 40-year-old man driving the pickup was able to escape and swim to shore Monday afternoon but wasn’t able to save his son. The father was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries believed not to be life-threatening.

Skamania County sheriff’s divers found the pickup and the boy’s body about 9:30 p.m. Monday in about 40 feet of water.

The names of the father and son have yet to be released.

The right-hand westbound lane of the freeway was blocked for several hours east of Hood River.
