TACOMA — The Pierce County prosecutor has filed assault charges against a 59-year-old man accused of firing multiple shots at cars near his Gig Harbor home. The man lives near an elementary school.

Two women who worked late at the school Tuesday night reported hearing gunshots nearby as they locked up to leave. They drove off and each encountered a man with a rifle in the middle of a street. One woman said the man fired two shots, one of which hit one of her tires.

Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Thursday that responding officers found a man armed with a loaded rifle and handgun outside a home. The man claimed to have come home to find two people leaving his house with some of his guns. He said he fired warning shots.

The prosecutor says officers found multiple weapons and large amounts of ammunition at the man’s house, but no sign of a burglary.
