Business name: Advanced Air Systems.

Service manager:
Cathy Rutherford.

Address:
1720 N.E. 103rd Ave.

What the business does: Advanced Air Systems Inc. is a family owned and operated, third-generation heating and cooling contractor serving Vancouver and the Portland metro area. The company specializes in the installation and service of heat pumps, air handlers, gas furnaces, air conditioners, ductless heat pumps, electronic air cleaners and gas fireplaces/inserts.

Steps to build the business: Cathy Rutherford, service manager, said the company’s first goal in building their business is to ensure that current customers are happy with the service they have received and return with future heating and air conditioning needs. Advanced Air Systems is a preferred dealer with Clark Public Utilities and Northwest Natural Gas Co., which means it adheres to specific guidelines set forth by the utility companies. In addition, the company offers warranties on products and repair services.

Greatest challenge: The industry is very competitive and many businesses in the area offer the same services at varying levels, Rutherford said. Her company knows it is important to stay dedicated to quality, expertise and customer service. Because consumers have cut back on spending, there are fewer opportunities for providing services, Rutherford said.

What’s ahead:
The company keeps regular contact with current customers and is increasing marketing to keep the company’s name in front of potential customers. Rutherford said they have several new products to offer: high-tech touchscreens, Wi-Fi-capable thermostats, and energy-efficient heating and air conditioning equipment as well as rebates and incentives.
