Oil terminal opponents plan to protest Saturday in Vancouver

The Columbian
Published:

Hundreds of demonstrators are expected to turn out by land and water in Vancouver on Saturday to protest plans to send large amounts of coal and oil through the Pacific Northwest on its way to be burned elsewhere.

The protest, part of a national series of actions against the fossil fuel industry organized by the group 350.org, launches at 10 a.m. at Vancouver Landing, west of 100 Columbia St. The demonstration will last through 4 p.m. It will feature workshops on the health impacts of coal, speakers from across the region, boats assembled under the Interstate 5 bridge in what the group calls a peaceful, symbolic blocking of fossil-fuel exports and a march on the I-5 bridge.

The protest comes after Port of Vancouver commissioners on Tuesday approved a lease for what would be the largest oil terminal in the Pacific Northwest. Coal terminals have been proposed elsewhere in the Northwest.
