Business name:
Shur-Way Building Centers.

Owner:
Gary Yinger.

Address:
7124 N.E. St. Johns Road, Vancouver; and 10101 N. Portland Road, Portland.

What the business does:
Gary Yinger said Shur-Way Building Centers caters to remodelers, whether they are homeowners or contractors. The store has extensive millwork, flooring, hardwoods and more on the interior side, and the largest on-hand selection of cedar, treated lumber, fencing and composite decking for exterior projects in Clark County. Yinger said he is constantly looking for great values and unique product offerings for his customers. Shur-Way is special, he said, because the staff is knowledgeable about the store’s products. The average salesperson has been with the company for an average of nine years, he noted.

Steps to build the business: The company continues to treat all customers like the friends and neighbors in our community that they are, Yinger said. In addition, the company has expanded its advertising to radio and is exploring ways to build the company’s presence online, he said.

Greatest challenge:
The challenge is to manage the growth of the company in a way that balances the need for efficiency with providing personal attention to each customer, Yinger said. Another challenge for the company is to get its message to consumers who are being bombarded with advertising from the big box and chain stores.

What’s ahead:
Shur-Way is upgrading its online content and presence, as well as continuing a makeover of our showroom.

Owner’s business history: Yinger managed a tool rental business in Washougal before starting Shur-Cut Industries in Portland, with his father-in-law, Ray Groth, in 1980. Three years later he started Shur-Way Building Centers in North Portland and opened the Vancouver store in 1997.
