MIAMI (AP) — A filly owned in part by Miami Heat forward Rashard Lewis won a race at Gulfstream Park on Friday.
White Rose, a 3-year-old owned by Lewis and his longtime friend Jake Ballis, won a maiden race on the turf. Sent off as a heavy favorite, White Rose returned $3.40 for the win.
Ridden by John Velazquez and trained by Bill Mott, White Rose moved up steadily throughout the mile-and-an-eighth race, took the lead near the top of the stretch and held on from there.
Lewis was in the winners’ circle afterward, before making the half-hour drive south for the Heat game later Friday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. He says he’s been dabbling in horse ownership for a few years.
