SEATTLE — Seattle firefighters have extinguished a smoldering fire on a ship on Lake Washington.
Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore tells KOMO Radio they starved the fire of oxygen Monday by pumping carbon dioxide into a storage compartment where the fire was burning.
The ship is a decommissioned National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel moored near the NOAA office in the Sandpoint area of Seattle.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Moore says workers had been welding last week in the compartment that holds netting and other materials.
The NOAA website says the 215-foot Miller Freeman was decommissioned at the end of March. It was used for fisheries research and was based at Newport, Ore.
