MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has signed point guard Deandre Mathieu to a national letter of intent for next season.
Mathieu averaged 17.1 points, 6.5 assists and 6.1 rebounds for Central Arizona College last season. He spent his first year of college as a walk-on at Morehead State.
Mathieu joins Daquan McNeil as the first two members of new coach Richard Pitino’s inaugural recruiting class.
Pitino says Mathieu’s up-tempo style and ability to play both ends of the floor fits what he’s looking for as he brings in his frenetic, pressing philosophy to Minnesota.
Mathieu played at Knoxville Central High School, making him the third player on the Gophers roster from Tennessee. He joins guards Andre Hollins and Austin Hollins.
