AP Interview: Rogge cites need for targeted tests

LONDON (AP) — IOC President Jacques Rogge says Olympic officials have agreed that more targeted, out-of-competition testing is needed in the fight against doping.

Rogge tells The Associated Press that better testing — rather than more testing — is the best way forward in trying to catch drug cheats.

Drug-testing strategies and the role of the World Anti-Doping Agency were discussed at a summit meeting of Olympic leaders Tuesday in Lausanne, Switzerland.

While no details were given Tuesday, Rogge said in an interview Wednesday that all sides agreed “there should be more out-of-competition testing that is really unannounced.”

Rogge says there should also be “more targeted testing of athletes that might be considered as being suspicious,” especially in high-profile sports.

Rogge says Tuesday’s talks “will lead to very good collaboration with WADA.”
