Wednesday’s rainfall broke a record set in 1954, with 0.52 inch measured in Vancouver by 7 p.m. Monday was even soggier, with 0.78 inch, surpassing a record set in 1914.

May has been a month of weather extremes. The first two weeks of May were the driest and warmest on record, with an average of 62.5 degrees measured at Pearson Field, according to the National Weather Service in Portland.

These last two weeks have been the wettest on record, said meteorologist Colby Newman. Since May 14, the area has seen about 41/2 inches of rain.

The rainy conditions replenished groundwater and helped vegetation that may have started to become taxed during those first two weeks of the month.

While it’s not unusual to get cool, rainy days in late May or June, the amount of rainfall is unprecedented, Newman said.

Early predictions indicate that Clark County will wring out and warm up as we move into next week, possibly reaching the 80s by Tuesday.
