BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — First baseman Bobby Melley had four hits and an RBI to lift the Connecticut Huskies to a 5-2 victory over Virginia Tech in an NCAA Blacksburg Regional game on Friday.

The Huskies (35-26) had 16 hits — all singles. UConn scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead, and starting pitcher Carson Cross and the UConn bullpen made it stand.

UConn will play Oklahoma on Saturday. The Sooners beat Coastal Carolina 7-3.

Cross (9-4) went 6 1-3 innings, giving up six hits and one run. He walked three and struck out three.

Leading 1-0, the Huskies got an RBI single by LJ Mazzilli and then scored two runs with two outs in the fifth. Melley’s single to right scored Billy Ferriter, and Mazzilli scored on a throwing error by Virginia Tech catcher Chad Morgan.

The Hokies (38-21) had runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth inning. But Mark Zagunis struck out to end the game.
