SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres placed closer Huston Street on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because he has a strained left calf muscle.

Street, who spent time on the DL last season with an injury to the same calf muscle, has converted 11 of 12 save opportunities for San Diego. Both Street and Padres manager Bud Black said the injury is less severe this time, after Street missed nearly three weeks with the sore calf in 2012. Black said right-handers Luke Gregerson and Dale Thayer will be used to close games in Street’s absence, with Gregerson getting the bulk of the save chances.

The Padres also optioned right-handed pitcher Nick Vincent to Triple-A Tucson.

The Padres recalled left-handers Robbie Erlin and Tommy Layne from Tucson. Erlin will start Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, a move that became necessary when the Padres used Saturday’s scheduled starter, Clayton Richard, for two innings of relief in the 17-inning game Friday night. Vincent also pitched three innings in Friday’s game.
