Letter: Same guard holding more positions

The Columbian
Published: November 15, 2013, 4:00pm

I ran for a freeholder position in District 1. I have never run for anything before; it was fun, informative and I met some wonderful fellow citizens who were also running. I thank everyone who did vote for me.

I was initially excited about the freeholder process. I thought it would be a grass-roots opportunity for interested citizens to get involved, without needing lots of campaign money and/or endorsements. However, the majority of the freeholders chosen on Nov. 5 are either former or current elected officials.

It is disappointing that these officials, both present and past, who carry a lot of partisan baggage to say the least didn’t step aside and let more “citizens” get the freeholder positions. It would have been more in the spirit of the freeholder concept and involved more of the community in the government process.

As it stands now, it’s a lot of the same people who have been running the show in this county forming a committee to advise us on how to run the show in this county.
