ROCHESTER — Volunteers from Aberdeen to Chehalis to Puyallup on Friday morning worked on a lawn makeover for a Rochester veteran and his young family.

The 30 or so helpers, many from Home Depot, were there to support Kevin Bell, an Air Cavalry warrior who served in Iraq.

Bell returned from his tour unscathed but soon began to experience muscle weakness that grew progressively worse.

For the past three years, he has been in and out of hospitals, fighting an illness that impedes his mobility.

Volunteers Friday built a fence, cleared an area for play equipment, landscaped, mowed, power-washed and cleaned gunk from the gutters.

The project benefits Bell, who turned 37 on Friday, his wife, Jacqueline, and their daughter, Tessa. Home Depot provided the majority of the money for the project.
