Letter: Vote with care for own community

The Columbian
Published: October 27, 2013, 5:00pm

The election process has changed since I ran for council. We did not have Facebook, Twitter or organized groups who like to state a candidate’s position to meet their own needs. Instead you walked the precinct and maybe sent out a flier with your own money. Today you need to raise at least $30,000 just to combat statements made by different organizations and individuals.

I received three mailings so far from Vancouver Vitality, an organization that suddenly appeared in the area. They must have a lot of money. One of its main contributors is a Washougal company. You have to wonder why a Washougal company is so interested in the Vancouver City Council and who else is supporting them. What will they get for their money?

A person runs for council to become part of a team that decides on the best approach to solving the city’s problems. The results should be for the community as a whole and not for political reasons.

This election will define what will happen in our city for many years. We have a great city. We should not let outsiders determine its direction. Look carefully as to who is promoting the candidates and determine if their voice is in the best interest of our community. Vote wisely.
