Community notebook: CCYF, Pop Warner football teams play for season titles

Championships games set for District Stadium on Saturday

Clark County Youth Football and local Pop Warner youth football leagues will hold playoff games this week.

On Saturday, five CCYF championship games will be played at District Stadium in Battle Ground. The Raiders and Hawks kick off the action, playing at 9 a.m. for the seventh-grade title. At 11 a.m., the championship for grades 2-3 will feature the Cubs against the Lightning. At 1 p.m., the grades 4-5 championship will feature the Thunder and the Bears. At 3 p.m., the Panthers and Titans play for the sixth-grade title. At 5 p.m., the Tigers and Storm play for the eighth-grade championship.

CCYF on Saturday also will hold games between teams that did not qualify for its championship games. Those games are scheduled for Washougal High School, Prairie High School, Kiggins Bowl and McKenzie Stadium. Admission costs $2 at each stadium.

Pop Warner playoff games are scheduled for Sunday at District Stadium in Battle Ground. Junior Pee Wee Division games will be played at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. An unlimited division game between Portland and Kelso is scheduled for 3 p.m. In the Pee Wee Division, North County and East County play at 5 p.m.Championship games in the Pee Wee Division and the Junior Pee Wee Division will be played on Nov. 10 in Parkrose.

Prep hockey team wins

Team Gaustad, which includes players from Clark County, posted a 6-0 win over Team Hossa in a Winterhawks Varsity Hockey game on Sunday at the Winterhawks Skating Center.

Union High School sophomore Alex Stoneham provided an assist, as did Kelso High’s Matt Latshaw.Winterhawks Varsity Hockey is a high school hockey league for players from around the Metro area. Team Gaustad’s next game is at 3 p.m. on Nov. 3. The Winterhawks Skating Center is at the Valley Plaza shopping center at 9250 S.W. Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy.

Parks donation aids youth soccer

The Parks Foundation of Clark County has received $3,000 to help children from low income homes in Clark County participate in youth soccer programs offered through Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation.

The $3,000 was donated in memory of Darin Thorp, a local soccer coach and referee who was killed in a January car accident.To learn about how to apply for scholarship money, contact Dave Perlick at david.perlick@cityofvancouver.us or 360-487-8314.

Run like a zombie

Run 2 Survive, a zombie themed 2.5-mile run, will take place near dusk on Saturday at the Al Angelo Fields adjacent to Endeavor Elementary School, 2701 N.E. 4 Seasons Lane in Vancouver.

The run and associated Zombie Fest activities are being held to raise money for the Evergreen School District Foundation.
