Letter: Abuse exists because we ignore it

The Columbian
Published: April 11, 2014, 5:00pm

It is disappointing to find out that there are possibly illegal brothels existing right under our noses, such as the suspected brothel in Vancouver’s Arnada neighborhood. It is shameful that people anywhere in the world would exploit people in such a way, let alone in our own backyard. The people exploiting women in these “massage” parlors are getting away with it, too.

They exist in our community because there are people in our community willing to turn a blind eye, willing to participate and contribute to this horrendous exploitation. It may be difficult, or even life-threatening, for an exploited individual to speak up.

Human trafficking is an issue that affects people everywhere, and because of this people everywhere need to speak up. As free people, we have the power to speak against human trafficking and exploitation.
