How do you improve your chances of surviving a house fire? The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office will show the effectiveness of having fire sprinklers at home in a live fire demonstration. The public is welcome to attend the mock burn at 6:30 p.m. today at Fire Station 5, 7110 N.E. 63rd St.

As house fire-related deaths have increased by 300 percent over the last year, the fire department looks to educate people about fire dangers.

“Residential fire sprinklers protect lives and property by keeping fires small,” said Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli. “Because the sprinkler system reacts so quickly, it can dramatically reduce heat, flames and smoke produced by a fire — allowing people more time to escape safely.”
