The Vancouver Fire Department battled a fire Wednesday in a stairwell landing at an east Vancouver apartment complex.

Several people called 911 around 2 p.m. to report the fire at The Park at Mill Plain, 12800 N.E. Fourth St. Firefighters arrived to find a small fire on a third-floor landing, said Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli.

Resident Pat Lenzen said she heard someone banging on her door.

“I heard the word ‘fire,’ ” she said.

She got out of her apartment and alerted her next-door neighbors.

There were combustibles on the landing, including some latex paint from a painting crew. The workers safely got out of the complex. Nobody was injured or displaced by the fire, which was extinguished at about 2:15 p.m. The fire sprinkler system didn’t have to activate.

Damage to the landing and the exterior of two adjacent third-floor apartments is estimated at about $10,000, Scarpelli said.

Her office is investigating the fire’s cause.
