As their coach put it, the Columbia River girls basketball team overachieved again.

The Chieftains shut out North Thurston in the third quarter and went on to a 39-28 victory Monday in a loser-out game of the 3A bi-district tournament at Clover Park High School in Tacoma.

“It was great defense and rebounding that didn’t allow any second-chance shots,” River coach Carl Click said of the third quarter where River outscored North Thurston 11-0. “We didn’t press much that quarter, it was mostly halfcourt defense.

“They never really got off any good shots, and when they did, we got the rebound.”

Marion Lilly led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points. Teaghan Cowles had eight points and four steals, Kate Kraft had six points and five steals, and Megan Bloom had eight rebounds and five points.

Columbia River was down 17-16 at the half, and then never let North Thurston get within seven points in the second half.

The Chieftains (13-10) next face Kennedy (17-5) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Park in the double-elimination portion of the bi-district tournament.
