The Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars played to their second draw in six days on Wednesday, battling to a 1-1 tie at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.

Both goals came on penalty kicks.

In the 27th minute, Allie Long put Portland ahead by converting after Veronica Boquete was tripped just inside the penalty area.

Chicago’s goal was scored in the 86th minute after a handball foul in the penalty area. Emily Van Egmond converted the penalty kick.

Both teams have six wins, six losses and four draws. With 22 points from 16 games, the Thorns and Red Stars share fifth place in the nine-team National Women’s Soccer League. They are one point out of third place.

In Sunday’s 2-2 draw between the same teams in Portland, Chicago scored two late goals to earn the draw.

The Thorns will again play at Chicago on July 17. Before that trip, the Thorns will host second-place FC Kansas City at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The time of that kickoff has been changed so it doesn’t conflict with the World Cup final.
