Fire damaged a home in west Vancouver’s Rose Village neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, leaving it uninhabitable.

The fire at 2914 N St. was reported to 911 around 3:20 p.m Multiple people reported smoke and flames, prompting crews to send additional fire engines.

Firefighters arrived a few minutes later to find heavy, dark smoke coming out of the front window and fire in the living room, said Vancouver Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Stromberg. A neighbor attempted to douse the fire with a garden hose. The only occupant was outside and uninjured, Stromberg said.

In total, 19 firefighters with the Vancouver Fire Department and Fire District 6 responded to the blaze, getting it under control in about 10 minutes, according to Stromberg. As temperatures crept toward 90 degrees Wednesday afternoon, firefighters had to be rotated out more frequently to rest.

Stromberg said the damage to the house was extensive. Besides the fire damage on the ground floor, there was smoke damage and water damage in the basement.

The 1.5-story house was built in 1936 and is owned by James Haines of Vancouver, according to county property records.

The Vancouver Fire Marshal is investigating.
