PORTLAND — A Portland man says he found a rat in his toilet bowl.

KGW-TV reported that Daniel Powers woke up in the middle of the night last week to the sound of scratching in his bathroom. He found the rat after lifting up his toilet lid.

Powers said he put a pile of books on top of the lid to keep the rat out. By morning, the animal was gone.

Randy Witten, owner of a pest control business, said rain causes older sewer systems to flood, which can send the rats into side lines and eventually into homes.
