Letter: Your vote determines your future

The Columbian
Published: November 1, 2014, 12:00am

I believe in the U.S. Constitution, its Bill of Rights and its Amendments. Although times have changed since it was initially written when citizens were still using muskets, I believe that we should have access to guns for sport and self-defense except for those who are mentally unstable and those with a history of criminality. Additionally, having been granted the right to vote, I believe that for a democratic republic to function best, its citizens have to have a voice in determining its leaders and policies.

Each registered voter has a vote; corporations and other private entities do not. Our elections are being corrupted through the massive amounts of money donated by corporations, unions and wealthy individual donors who have their own agendas. We can combat this through our collective voice at the ballot box by simply voting.

Whatever your political philosophy, you have the right — no, the duty — to help determine the government you want. Corporate/union entities do not.

Join me. Read, be informed about the candidates and the issues. Shy away from very partisan news networks like Fox News and MSNBC and Internet blogs for accurate information. Instead listen to the Public Broadcasting System, The League of Women Voters, newspapers and the Voters’ Pamphlet, which was mailed to your voting address.

Let’s be responsible citizens and vote.
