MARYSVILLE — The pictures, balloons and flowers that covered a fence at Marysville-Pilchuck High School after last month’s shooting are being removed.

The chain-link fence became a temporary memorial to the four students who were shot to death and the wounded student who is recovering. There are also kind words for the shooter who took his own life.

The Daily Herald reports students and staff are removing items from the fence Monday. Flowers will be composted. Paper items will be burned; the ashes saved.

Families of the dead and injured students were notified of the removal plan so they could visit one last time over the weekend.

In the months ahead the school district and community will plan a permanent memorial.
