Vancouver — The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington received a $9,500 grant to continue its Diabetes Care Program.

The grant from Kaiser Permanente Northwest will be used to help cover the costs associated with the program, such as prescriptions and supplies.

Data shows that low-income people — the population served by the Free Clinic — are more likely to suffer from uncontrolled diabetes due to lack of access to health care. Diabetics are more likely to experience stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and amputation, according to the Free Clinic.

“With the high costs of insulin and diabetic supplies, this grant means that we can supply patients with the medications they need,” Kimberly Wolfe, Free Clinic medical clinic supervisor, said in a news release.
