Letter: Beware of big-money campaigning

The Columbian
Published: August 16, 2015, 5:00pm

Port of Vancouver commission candidate Lisa Ross, a proponent of the oil terminal, is bankrolled by County Councilor David Madore and another rich guy, plus big oil interests. According to Public Disclosure Commission records, Madore gave Ross $11,000, Clyde Holland gave $5,000, and substantial contributions were sent by the oil companies that want to build a massive terminal that could move 350,000 barrels per day.

Residents can expect the largesse to be ramped up for November, likely funneled through front groups. You know how it goes; you’ll see an ad from a group like “Washington Nice People for Business Jobs” all over your television screen when you’re trying to watch football. What they won’t mention is the paltry 120 permanent jobs the oil terminal would create.

As the old saying goes, caveat emptor, or “buyer beware.”
