As world leaders — and Gov. Jay Inslee — convene in Paris for the historic U.N. climate conference, we have an opportunity to “think globally and act locally” here at home. We have an opportunity to comment on the proposed oil terminal for the Port of Vancouver, which could significantly impact our community, region, and climate.
As kids are writing letters to Santa with holiday wish lists, here’s another suggestion: Families can make comments online, with input from children and grandchildren. This could be a lesson in expressing beliefs and values with the hope of making a difference. As evidenced by recent hearings, many kids are already speaking up about the importance of clean air and water in their future.
Public comments will be reviewed by a state agency, which will make a recommendation to the governor, who will make the final decision on the oil terminal.
Comments on the Tesoro-Savage Draft Environmental Impact Statement are accepted through December at www.efsec.wa.gov. Families can then click on “DEIS comment website” and type their comments. These might be the most important “letters to Santa” that kids will ever write.
