SEATTLE — The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings as a major winter storm moves into the Pacific Northwest.

The system arriving Thursday is also bringing rain to the lowlands and snow to the mountains.

Weather officials say western Washington can expect sustained winds of 40 mph and gusts of up to 60 mph.

Puget Sound Energy customers were already without power early Thursday and Redmond High School was closed because of a power outage. Snow has forced some schools in the Tri-Cities area to close on Thursday.

Snow is also being reported in the Cascades and over the major passes.
