Letter: Continue opposition to terminal

By Diamond Jones, Vancouver
Published: December 6, 2015, 6:00am

Building the Tesoro-Savage oil terminal would bring up to 360,000 barrels of oil from North Dakota into the Port of Vancouver to then transfer the oil onto other transportation. It would require at least four mile-and-a-half-long trains through town daily, creating problems such as congested traffic and increased pollution in the environment. In addition, the Columbia River would not be able to withstand an oil spill without damaging its ecosystem.

The residents of the community have voiced opposition of this terminal, multiple times, in ballots and at town hall meetings, making it apparent that this is not what we want. Paint a picture of billowing smoke, overcast smog-filled skies and noises, smells and blockades from the trains passing through our landscapes. We don’t want to risk our environment just to be put on the map in some corporate world of oil.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
