WOODLAND — Road maintenance crews were able to open two lanes on Interstate 5 Thursday night following Wednesday’s road-closing mudslide, and officials will continue to monitor the hillside above the roadway over the weekend.

Washington State Department of Transportation spokesman Bart Treece said transportation officials hope to keep the two lanes open through the weekend. The right lane and Dike Road offramp remained closed Friday night.

Geotechnical experts have been watching the hillside, he said, but it’s too soon to make many determinations as to the next course of action for the road.

“We don’t know what else may need to be addressed, so this is just part of us being thorough,” Treece said.

The state received $1 million in emergency funding from the federal Department of Transportation Friday in response to WSDOT’s request for $3 million, according to Sen. Patty Murray’s office.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency in Washington on Wednesday after storms and flooding left damage across the state.
