I’d like to respond to Dale Perry’s Feb. 11 letter “Abdullah’s declaration admirable,” expressing his adoration of Jordan’s King Abdullah.
King Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein is an unelected overlord who has unilaterally set his nation, full speed ahead, on the course to war over the most base of emotions: revenge. Is this the future of the world he wants us all to live in? And does his “respect” for the military include sacrificing 8,000 of them to death and more than 50,000 wounded or mutilated in two conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan that have, arguably, accomplished little?
To Perry, who I consider one of our own homegrown neoconservative chickenhawks, and others like him, I say: America, the world, the military, and the treasury are on to you. Some U.S. involvement may still be required in that quagmire known as the Middle East, but 14 years of continuous combat (the longest in our nation’s history) and $1.5 trillion of war spending are enough. Childish frustrations will have to play out on another stage in the future, maybe the playground.
