MIAMI — Tropical Storm Blanca is forecast to rapidly strengthen and become a major hurricane this week over the eastern Pacific.
The storm’s maximum sustained winds Tuesday were near 70 mph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to be near major hurricane strength on Wednesday.
Blanca is centered about 375 miles south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is currently stationary. A slow and erratic motion is expected over the next few days.
Meanwhile, swells generated by Hurricane Andres are affecting the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Andres is headed toward cooler waters, and its maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 90 mph with continued weakening expected.
Andres is centered about 910 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
