DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AWARDS

Employees and volunteers at the Larch Corrections Center recently received awards recognizing their work for the department, and were honored at a ceremony in Olympia. The recipients were Joseph Agloro, Innovation Team Award; Alan Anderson, Employee of the Year; Gregory Benjamin, Correctional Officer of the Year; Sidney Clark, Community Service Award; Donna Schafte-Brandon, Volunteer of the Year and Nancy Simmons, Diversity Award.

FULBRIGHT GRANT

Erin Carson, a Vancouver resident and a 2015 graduate of Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., received a Fulbright grant to teach abroad. At Linfield, Carson majored in international relations and minored in Chinese studies, and studied in China during her junior year. She plans to be an English teaching assistant in Taiwan. In addition to her studies, she served as the student director of Language in Motion and played on Linfield’s softball team, which recently placed third in the NCAA Division III national tournament. In Taiwan, she hopes to work with youth and the community to connect through sports. She is a 2011 graduate of Camas High School.

SOCIETY OF WASHINGTON ARTISTS—SPRING SHOW AWARDS

In May, 125 local artists of various ages and skill levels exhibited their artwork in the Society of Washington Artists’ show and sale. Their art was judged and awards were presented. Joann Radmilovich Kollman won Best of Show for her oil painting, “The Red Hat.” Other award winners were:

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON—PRESIDENT’S MEDAL

Sara K. Leonetti of Vancouver was awarded the University of Washington President’s Medal for most distinguished academic record, and graduated summa cum laude on June 13 with a double major in history and philosophy. She competed on the university’s Mock Trial team and was awarded “All American Attorney” at the national competition as the first female to score a perfect 30. She was judicial chair of her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, and is chapter president of Phi Alpha Theta and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Leonetti plans to teach English for one year in Asia before starting law school. She is a 2011 graduate of Skyview High School and the daughter of Gina Leonetti of Vancouver, and Kurt Doyl of Damascus, Ore.

WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY—PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR AWARD

Evan Rumble, a 2009 graduate of Ridgefield High School and a graduate of Western Washington University in Bellingham, won a Presidential Scholar Award from Western’s College of Fine and Performing Arts. He received a bachelor’s degree in art education last winter.
