Workers prepare to lift part of tunnel machine out of pit

They hope Bertha operational by August

SEATTLE — Crews trying to repair Seattle’s massive tunnel-boring machine say they hope to get it drilling again by August.

The machine, nicknamed Bertha, broke down in December 2013 and workers dug a 120-foot-deep pit to reach the front. On Monday, members of the media were able to look down into the pit for the first time and see the rescue work.
