Community notebook: Calwell, Cox capture swim titles at short course championships

Kasey Calwell and Livi Cox won individual championships, and Calwell helped his team win a relay race during the Oregon Swimming/Region XII Senior Short Course Championships.

The meet for swimmers 18 and younger with qualifying times took place Friday through Sunday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Calwell won the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.93 seconds. A Camas High School senior who swims for Vancouver’s Columbia River Swim Team, Calwell also anchored the winning 400-yard free relay team.

Cox, a Union High School student who swims for Mount Hood Aquatics, won the women’s 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 6.36 seconds. Cox also placed third in the 100 back (59.70), fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:13.86), and sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.54).

Joining Calwell on the winning 400 free relay team from the Columbia River Swim Team were Chris Xue, Thomas Utas, and Jonah Rodewald. Their time was 3:10.72.

Calwell also swam on CRST relay teams that placed third in the 800 free and fifth in the 200 free.

Rodewald placed third in the boys 200 back (1:59.90) for CRST and ninth in the 100 back (54.35). Darya Samiee placed eighth in the girls 100 free (54.91). Utas placed ninth in the boys 200 free (1:46.94).

The LaCamas Headhunters of Camas had several swimmers record top-five finishes. Hannah Clayton finished second in the girls 50 free (25.95). Alexa Roemer placed third in the girls 200 IM and fifth in the 100 butterfly (58.51). Katharine Kaplan placed 10th in the girls 100 free (55.36)

Jeff Fadlovich of LaCamas Headhunters placed fourth in the boys 1,000 free, seventh in the boys 500 free (5:02.51), seventh in the 1,650 free (17:55.18). Jacob McCarthy placed sixth in the boys 50 free. Chris Cresap placed 10th in the boys 100 breast (1:01.96).

Several area swimmers have qualified to swim at the Northwest Section Senior Championships, which begin on Wednesday in Federal Way. Among the locals expected to compete are Calwell, Cox, Rodewald, Cresap, Xue and others.

High school rugby season starts

The Clark County Warriors opened their 2015 high school rugby season on Saturday with a 55-17 win over North Clackamas at Skyridge Middle School. The Warriors are the defending champions of the Rugby Oregon Club Championship Division, which is for teams of players from multiple high schools.

The season for teams with players from one high school — the Boys High School Varsity Division — will begin March 21. Union, Battle Ground and Prairie high schools will have teams in that division this spring.

A second girls high school rugby team from Clark County formed this season. The Vancouver Highlanders join Battle Ground in the Rugby Oregon Girls High School Division.

The Highlanders opened their season with two 30-minute matches on Saturday, beating the Linn-Benton Lions 33-0 and losing 17-5 to the Valley Panthers.

The Battle Ground girls team lost 61-26 to the Lady Barbarians in its season opener.

Lacrosse season begins

Evergreen Girls Lacrosse, a team of players from Evergreen Public Schools high schools, begins its season with road matches on Tuesday and on Thursday.

The Black Cats play in the Nisqually Conference of the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association. Their opener today is at 5 p.m. against Bethel High School at Art Crate Field in Spanaway. On Thursday, Evergreen visits Tahoma High School of Covington.

The three Clark County boys high school lacrosse teams begin their schedule next week.

The King’s Way Lacrosse program that brought the sport to Clark County this year will be called Columbia River, though it will play home matches at King’s Way Christian High School beginning with a non-league match against Tualatin (Ore.) at 8 p.m. on March 16.

Union High School will open its season on March 17 at Century High School of Hillsboro, Ore. Camas will start with a non-league match against Wenatchee at 8:30 p.m. on March 20 at Doc Harris Stadium.

The Clark County teams play in the Central-South Conference of Division II of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association. The league schedule begins in mid-April and runs through May 12 and is followed by state playoffs.

Girls lacrosse clinic — Vancouver Youth Lacrosse is hosting a Saturday try-it clinic for girls in grades 1-8. The free clinic is 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Gaiser Middle School. For details, visit www.vancouveryouthlacrosse.com.
