College notebook: Wonderly all-league in bars, balance beam

Sacramento State University senior gymnast Kayla Wonderly of La Center was named All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in balance beam and uneven bars at the MPSF championships Saturday in Anchorage, Alaska.

A graduate of CAM High School in Battle Ground who trained at Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Wonderly posted regional qualifying scores of 9.775 in bars and 9.710 on beam.

The Hornets placed third in the six-team conference meet. Wonderly tied for fourth place with a 9.850 on beam and tied for 19th on bars with a 9.625.

Dallas Smith of Heisson, also a CAM graduate and a Hornets senior, placed 17th in floor exercise with a score of 9.725. Smith trained at Naydenov Gymnastics of Vancouver.

Mejia first team all-conference on bars

Boise State University sophomore Diana Mejia was named First Team All-Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference on uneven bars.

The Skyview High School graduate, who trained at Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland, posted her season best score of 9.900 as the Broncos claimed the conference title. The Broncos were second in team scoring going into beam, their final rotation of the meet.

Boise State was selected as the third seed in the NCAA Berkeley Regional meet April 4 at the University of California.

Brigham Young placed fifth at the MRGC championships and will also compete in Berkeley, Calif.

BYU senior KayCee Gassaway of Vancouver, who trained at Naydenov Gymnastics of Vancouver, led the Cougars at the conference meet on both bars and floor exercise, scoring 9.800 in both. She also scored 9.750 on vault, third on the team.

Softball

OIT’s Duncan garners weekly honors again

Oregon Tech senior Jessi Duncan was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.

The Prairie High School graduate pitched a complete game one-hit shutout Friday in a 4-0 win over Northwest Christian. She entered Sunday’s game against Corban University with the Owls trailing 6-3, limiting Corban to one run on five hits the rest of the way in OIT’s 8-7 win.

On Monday, the start of the next conference week, Duncan improved to 9-3 with a one-hit complete game victory over Northwest University as Oregon Tech won 14-1.

Docherty’s career day leads Wildcats

Chico State University junior Alistair Docherty shot a career-low 66 in the final round of the California Baptist Invitational on Tuesday, spurring the Wildcats to the day’s low score of 1-under par 287 and a third-place finish.

Chico State battled back from seventh place to finish third, stretching their streak of top-five finishes to 16. That includes the first eight events of 2014-15.

Docherty, tied for 25th entering the final round, roared back to finish third for his fourth consecutive top-10 finish and the 19th of his collegiate career. The 2013-14 All-American, a Union High School graduate, finished 1-under par and two shots out of the lead.

Track and field

Arn tops NCAA-III list

George Fox University senior Charity Arn posted the top heptathlon score in NCAA Division III during competition Thursday and Friday in the multi-events competition at the Westmont Collegiate Classic meet in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Woodland High School graduate totaled 4,678 points, including a personal record in javelin of 116 feet, 6 inches. Arn’s other times and marks: 15.54 seconds in the 100 meters; 5-3 in high jump, 34-10½ in shot put, 27.97 seconds in the 200 meters, 17-5¾ in long jump and 2:26.76 in the 800. Arn placed third.
