Registration for the annual Race for the Cure, Susan G. Komen Oregon and Southwest Washington’s signature event, opened Friday.

This year’s event, with the theme “Racing for those we love,” is Sept. 20 at Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The event features the 5K walk/run, food, live music and a special kids zone.

Early registration discounts are available for those who sign up by May 31, and coupons from Les Schwab Tire Centers are offered to everyone who signs up through August.

Money raised from the event supports breast health education, mammograms, survivor support through access to treatment, advocacy work and research grants at Oregon Health & Science University and Providence.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised at the event will stay in the local region; the remaining 25 percent goes toward national breast cancer research.

For more information and to register for the event, visit the Komen Oregon and Southwest Washington website, www.komenoregon.org.
