Two teens in custody at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center allegedly teamed up to attack a staff member in an attempt to escape on Saturday.

Roy James Thompson Jr., 15, and Daniel Coffman, 16, appeared in juvenile court Monday on suspicion of custodial assault and first-degree attempted escape. Both were in custody at the center in connection with other felony incidents.

Thompson and a co-defendant are accused of breaking into an east Vancouver home in April and assaulting and robbing a 65-year-old woman. He faces allegations of first-degree assault, robbery, burglary and kidnapping.

Efforts to obtain Coffman’s criminal history and pending charges were unsuccessful Monday afternoon.

While in a classroom at the center, Thompson allegedly hit a detention officer, Scott Campbell, with a chair. A witness, Maria Campbell, said she then saw Coffman try to break out a window with another chair, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in juvenile court.

Scott Campbell was reportedly injured, but the nature and extent were not contained in a brief report of the incident filed with the court.

Both Coffman and Thompson allegedly admitted to planning the assault and escape earlier in the day, according to the report. The time of the incident was not listed in the report.

Thompson and Coffman are next scheduled to appear in court in this case May 14.
