Student leaders with Evergreen Public Schools are stepping in to keep their classmates fed this week while teachers take Wednesday off to picket legislators for more education funding.

School has been canceled Wednesday as Evergreen faculty members plan to join the Camas, Washougal and Hockinson school districts in a day of protests throughout the county. Teachers are demanding the Legislature meet its court-mandated duty to fully fund basic education.

Looking ahead, student government representatives at Mountain View High School are planning to give out sack lunches on Tuesday and Wednesday to students who have signed up for free or reduced-price meals. In the meantime, the students are collecting donations to pay for the food.

The goal is to provide more than 150 lunches, district officials said in a press release.

The lunches will be available Tuesday afternoon at Marrion Elementary School and during lunchtime on Wednesday at Crestline Elementary School. Far more than half of the students at each campus receive free or reduced-price lunches.
