A 3-year-old’s arm was seriously injured by a lawn mower Thursday night at a residence in Washougal.

The traumatic injury was reported shortly before 8 p.m. near Northeast Washougal River Road and Hughes Road.

Initial reports indicated that the child either fell off the lawn mower or somehow fell into its path, and the child’s hand, arm or both were severely injured, Camas-Washougal Fire Department Chief Nick Swinhart said.

A Life Flight helicopter transported the child to Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland.

Early reports, relayed over emergency radio, were that the child’s hand was severed, but Swinhart said he wasn’t sure about the extent of the trauma.

“I do know the injury was severe enough to warrant being airlifted to the hospital,” Swinhart said.
