The Woodland softball team took fourth place on Saturday at the Class 2A state tournament in Selah.

After falling 12-8 to White River in the semifinals on Saturday morning, the Beavers bounced back with an 11-2 win over Ellensburg to guarantee themselves a trophy. In the game for third place, Othello beat Woodland 8-1.

W.F. West of Chehalis, the District 4 champion, beat White River of Buckley 3-2 for the state title.

In the semifinals, Woodland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But White River answered with five runs in the bottom of the first.

Sidra Malik scored in the top of the second when her bunt turned into a four-base throwing error, but that was a close as the Beavers could get. The Hornets scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to bold a 12-3 lead.

Woodland battled back with three runs in the top of the fifth, had a double play end their sixth inning, then scored twice in the seventh.

A six-run second inning highlighted the bounce-back win over Ellensburg. Woodland had seven hits in the inning which gave the Beavers an 8-0 lead.

In the game for third place, Othello scored five runs in the top of the second inning to lead 6-1 on its way to the win.

Woodland finished the season 23-7.

Last season Woodland placed third at the Class 1A state tournament. Two seasons ago the Beavers were second in 1A. In 2010 Woodland won the Class 2A state title.

La Center’s season ended Saturday with a 6-5 loss to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, which went on to place third in Richland.

La Center (22-5) trailed for most of the elimination game until a two-run sixth inning put the Wildcats on top 5-4.

Abby England hit a run-scoring double, and Alicen Smith drove in a run.

Lakeside won it with a two-run bottom of the seventh.

La Center coach Randy Martinez said it was a great team effort all weekend.

“Abby England was tough on the mound all weekend. Kayla Aguirre, Rachel Moudy, Lilly Casey and Megan Muffett were all stellar at the plate and in the field,” he said.

Montesano won the state title by beating Hoquiam 7-1.
