Makena Wilcox of Columbia River girls swimming was voted The Columbian’s high school winter sports athlete of the week, sponsored by Athletes Corner, for the week ending Oct. 10.

Wilcox collected 40 percent of the 1,534 votes cast by fans to beat out Savanna Craig of Mountain View girls cross country, who had 32 percent.

Wilcox won the 100 fly and 100 back and swam on 2 winning relays in the Kelso Invitational.

The other nominees were Yacine Guermali of Camas boys cross country, Elle Nesbitt of Woodland volleyball and Taryn Ries of Ridgefield girls soccer.

Nominees and the online ballot are posted at www.360preps.com each Monday and voting continues until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Athletes may be elected player of the week once during the regular season, and no athlete can be nominated for the honor in consecutive weeks.
